Cleaning Stock Footage for Documentary Projects

Documentary editors frequently work with stock footage that carries a watermark - either a library preview watermark or a third-party logo. This guide explains the professional workflow for cleaning up such footage, including licensing, technical settings, and quality control.

Was Sie benötigen

  • ✓Licensed stock footage files. Do not use this service on footage you do not have rights to.
  • ✓A non-linear editor (Premiere Pro, Final Cut, DaVinci Resolve, Avid).
  • ✓A calibrated reference monitor for color-critical work.

Schritt-für-Schritt-Anleitung

1

Step 1: Verify the License

Before processing, confirm that your license permits watermark removal. Most major stock libraries (Getty, Pond5, Artgrid, Storyblocks) grant the right to clean up preview watermarks as part of the standard license. The license terms are in your purchase confirmation. If unsure, contact the library before processing.

2

Step 2: Import at Native Resolution

Bring the watermarked file into your project at its native resolution and frame rate. Do not re-wrap or recompress. The highest quality input produces the highest quality output. If the file is ProRes 4444, work in ProRes 4444. If it is H.264 4:2:2 10-bit, work in that codec. The processing pipeline preserves the input codec and bit depth.

3

Step 3: Run the Watermark Removal

Upload the file to our service. The system will detect the watermark region automatically. For moving watermarks, the system tracks the region across frames to produce a consistent result. Processing time scales with file size and complexity: a 30-second 4K clip typically takes 4-6 minutes.

4

Step 4: Re-Import and Conform

Once processing is complete, re-import the cleaned file into your NLE. Replace the watermarked clip in your timeline. The cleaned file should match the original in timecode and resolution. Verify the swap by scrubbing the timeline and watching for any temporal artifacts.

5

Step 5: Quality Control

Watch the cleaned clip on a calibrated monitor, in a darkened room, at native resolution. Look for: ghosting of the original watermark, halos around the cleaned region, temporal flicker between frames, color shifts in the cleaned area. If you find issues, re-run with manual mask guidance.

Profi-Tipps

  • ★For long projects, process multiple clips in parallel using the batch upload option.
  • ★Keep the original watermarked files in your project archive in case you need to re-process.
  • ★For archival documentaries, run the cleaned footage through a denoiser to remove any residual grain noise from the inpainting process.
  • ★Document the cleaning step in your paper trail - some broadcasters require disclosure of AI-assisted processing.
